At least thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
