Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
